Sixty-six letters by Bonner of Washington, N.C., a Confederate artillery officer, written to his wife, Virginia Ellison Bonner, while he was attached to the 31st and 40th North Carolina Regiments and stationed in the Cape Fear defenses at Fort Fisher, 1862-1864, and at Fort Holmes on Smith Island (Bald Head Island), February-November 1864, describing military events and conditions in the Wilmington and Southport, N.C., areas, especially at Ft. Fisher and Smith Island, commenting on news received and state politics, and expressing his feelings; and a few later family letters.

Macon Bonner (born 1836) of Washington, N.C., was a Confederate artillery officer who served in coastal North Carolina. Bonner joined Company B, which had been organized in Beaufort County, N.C., in September 1861.
